When
Shaun's dad suggested that he bought a Renault
5 Campus as he first car, "what are great
idea dad" was not Shaun’s first
reply. However after contemplating the prospect
of driving a car with less street cred than
a pair of grey chinos, he decided to buy a
campus as it's about all he could get insured,
|
without
fooling his parents into re-mortgaging their
house. On top of that he had devised an
eevil plan, ok so it wasn't evil but a plan
nonetheless. Shaun planned to buy a written
off Renault 5 Turbo and strip it of all
its goodies, within a week he had found
a suitable car, it had everything bar an
engine, which for obvious reasons was perfect,
a full body kit and interior for £100
-bargain. Whilst looking for a body shop
that could squeeze him in ASAP he ordered
new rims, 15 inch Mille Spiders. A few days
later Shaun was faced with a huge dilemma
when his sparkling new alloys arrived -
Keep driving around in a completely standard
5 Campus and look a little bit sad or put
the alloys onto the campus and smash through
the barrier of social acceptable. Shaun
opted for the latter as he just couldn't
endure seeing the alloys stacked up in the
corner of his garage any longer. The following
week he had the car lowered 50mm and a Peco
big bore exhaust fitted, before getting
it kitted.
Finally the day Shaun had been waiting for
had arrived; it was time to collect the
completed car. After even a quick inspection
of his car it became evident why the body
shop could fit him in so quickly. The kit
colour wasn't the greatest and as for bonding,
not a tube on super glue in sight, a master
craftsman this guy was not, however the
kit was on the car at last. On the way home,
god took sympathy on Shaun and made sure
that he was sandwiched in a three car smash.
Remarkably although Shaun’s car was
the oldest of the three, he only lost his
rear bumper. A couple of intensive DIY hours
later and the bumper was back on the car,
admittedly sagging slightly, but he couldn't
pull the string any tighter. A couple of
months after his bump and a cheque arrived
from one of the other insurance companies,
to replace his bumper. With the money Shaun
bought another old Renault 5 Turbo rear
bumper, termite meshing; a Laguna grill
and a Prima Tarmac rear Spoiler. After some
recommendations he found a new garage to
do the work and had the lot fitted and bumpers
smoothed - Better still this time he couldn't
fit his fingers in the gap between the kit
and the car. The 5 was now almost complete,
a few finishing touches remained, such as
ICE, colour coded interior and a two Cobra
seats.
Now a modifying veteran – (not quite)
here are Shaun's top tips:
- When putting your
car to the garage to have it lowered take
the key for the locking wheel nuts.
- Only use a body
shop that has adequate ventilation
- Don't drive over
pot holes, especially deep ones.
